That there are multiple states dominated utterly by Republicans on the state level, but vote consistently Democratic presidentially, but none vice versa? And in that regard, what does this oddity say about the "GOP is Dead ZOMG" narrative? Are presidential elections really all that matter?

Exactly. The exact Opposite question would be asked since the last 3 midterms were dem waves.

Because Republicans do better in midterms when less voters show up. States really need to change their elections to be in presidential years.

The states I am assuming he means are ME, OH and Ma. They tend to vote opposite in different election years; but the state GOP doesnt go by party platforms that wants to ban all SSM like in Ma, so Baker can be reelected in 2018.

Rauner or Hogan wont be reelected, the state parties are dominated by Dems and had weak Dems running, in 2014.

State versus federal elections, local politics and alliances versus federal ones. There is some tendency of the two moving closer together, but we are by no means near to a merger yet, particularly in certain parts of the country, such as the NE and some of the Midwest.

I wish this site focused more on municipal American politics, the best electoral shenanigans are found at local levels. In fact I know next to nothing about most American local government.

It's a labyrinthine mess. You think English local government is hard to understand? It's easy in comparison; Green Eggs and Ham as to Finnegans Wake.

The only states that fit your description are Michigan and Wisconsin, and Wisconsin is iffy because it's fairly close in presidential elections. And of course, the answer is midterms.
