More than 46 would be nice but I think he is trying to lead by example and get Congress to finish the job. The President cant fix the problem of mandatory sentencing through the pardon office forever.

A good start. Another good move by an increasingly better President.

You've got to start somewhere.  And remember, folks, Obama still has another 18 months in office, so I can almost guarantee there will be plenty more where that came from.

Great news! Smiley Hope there's more to come (it would be nice to see Congress do something about it, but with the GOP in control it's still hard to believe).

One of his rare good moves. There is zero reason that a non-violent drug offender should get life in prison, unless they can be proven to be involved in a cartel or something extreme.

But yeah, his role should be to take on the most extreme cases like this and use his bully pulpit to push for sentencing reform, not to commute thousands of sentences and essentially rewrite the laws on his own.

Not only is this too small a number, he should have pardoned them rather than simply commuted their sentence. It's going to be hard for them to adjust to life on the outside if they still have any sort of criminal record.

I still hold out hope that there might be a mass pardon of non-violent drug offenders on his last day in office. Hopefully this was a trail run.

Why do they deserve pardons? They're large-scale drug offenders.

Their sentences were excessive, that's the only problem here.

We need about 1.5 million so that we're on par with the next highest Anglosphere nation (New Zealand).

Worth noting that Obama only has control over the 208,000 prisoners in the federal system

This may have been mentioned somewhere, so forgive me if it has, but President Obama is going to visit the federal prison in El Reno, Oklahoma which is just west of Oklahoma City on Thursday to talk with prison workers and inmates as part of his homestretch push to reform the criminal justice system.  He will be the first sitting president to visit a federal prison.

How many non-violent drug offenders are in federal prison?

Seriously asking but I can't imagine the number is very high.

Apparently 15% of current federal inmates at least being processed as non-violent by the DoJ.

What is weird is the amount of genuinely bipartisan bills coming through congress atm dedicated to reform. It's very freakish.

Like a bus full of lawyers at the bottom of the ocean, this is a good start.
