Rick Santorum was trying so hard to not be just the guy who hates gay marriage but that blue collar populist thing wasn't working so he decided to go back to the well. He is now going to the right of Walker and Cruz and calling for a constitutional ammendment to ban all same sex marriages, in every state. Take that Massachusetts and Hawaii!

Maybe this will get him the attention he seeks to get into the debates. He just needs a little bump up to knock Perry out.

I doubt this will get him any support. He's stuck in the past, and he won't appeal to anyone besides the hardline SoCons already in the party.

And even those people want fresh blood. Carson and Cruz will suck away his support.

even he knows that. But looking at how Donald Trump is winning by promising people that he can get Mexico to pay for a border wall shows that there is a disconnect between getting support and telling the truth.  The base hates gay marriage. So promise them you will take it all away.   And as I noted he just needs to go from polling in the 2% range to the 3-4% range to get onto that debate stage. He is currently just a point behind Perry in the averages.

But if Rick really wants to get attention he should have gone all the way. He should have brought back 'man on dog' or talked about 'unnatural unions' or said something so offensive (and yet commonplace among the base) that it got noticed and got him attacked by the mainstream press.

This shows how desperate he is to try and regain his 2012 momentum via the throwing of red meat to the Religious Right.  However, I just don't see him picking up  support beyond 5% nationally due to his fresher competition, which Sanchez pointed out.

Advocating a constitutional amendment is at least more proper than openly calling to defy the court ruling through extrajudicial means.

As I mentioned in another thread, Scott Walker's wife Tonette dodged the question when she was asked if she agrees with Scott on SSM, though she did note that their sons are pro-SSM, disagreeing with their dad.

Well, Santorum is now going after Walker on this, saying that his family disunity on the subject is a red flag:

Going after a guys family is of course a low blow and uncalled for. But we are now in the desperate phase for the people not ranked in the top 10 so pretty much anything goes.

Rick Santorum is out of touch with most Americans and most Republicans. There is a reason why President Bush didn't get the constitutional amendment passed when the GOP controlled both houses. Most Democrats support either civil-unions or same-sex marriage, and most Republicans support state's rights and many in the party are not opposed to same-sex marriage, including me.

And even the hardline SoCons prefer Huckabee and Carson over Santorum.

Didn't Romney support this same amendment in 2012?

Yes, but he heavily downplayed it throughout the campaign.

Whenever there are two sides to a political issue, Santorum can be relied on to support a third which is worse than both.

I think it's getting pretty likely that Santorum will drop out before Iowa, maybe even before the pre-Iowa debates finish up.

I'm very much opposed to same-sex marriage.  But, yes, that ship has sailed.  I can easily imaging over 13 states refusing to verify the amendment.

Like he is now. He really broke out in the last month or so before Iowa.

How was Santorum polling in Summer 2011?

In mid July 2011 Santorum was battling Huntsman for last place with around 2-5% both nationally and in Iowa

Maybe Huckabee, Santorum and Carson should take a look at the polling in November. They could have whoever is polling best in Iowa to stay in the race and have the other two drop out. The evangelical vote is split and prevents them from winning. It may be the only way for Ricky to repeat the 2012 magic.

Well, the Bushes talked a good game on abortion, but both Bush 41 and Bush 43 had wives that were pro-choice.  Bush 41 had been pro-choice until he made his Faustian bargain with the right (only to reverse himself after leaving office), and Bush 43 has inched closer to Laura Bush in being pro-choice since leaving the White House.

Santorum's not wrong here.
