Question 1: Yes, of course. It's a stupid, outdated rule in the Constitution. We should amend the clause that contains this rule.

Question 2: It depends on the circumstances. If this hypothethical candidate born out of the US immigrated here at an early age and was completely assimilated into the American society, I'd think we'd be ready for such a guy. If this hypothetical candidate was a complete FOB (unassimilated, speaks with a huge foreign accent, acts "different", etc.), I don't think we'd be ready. Although I don't think such a person would even run for POTUS (I'd totally support a "FOB" for president BTW if I liked his political views).

Question 3: I was born and raised in America.

How 'bout you guys?

Yes, because it's an outdated rule that was probably intended to ensure that a foreigner couldn't be elected and turn the presidency into a monarchy or whatever.

No, I don't think people would be ready, unless it's a white guy who spent all but his very early childhood in America. Though theoretically, William Shatner or Leonard Nimoy could have been elected, since they're very popular American icons.

Born and raised in America, and never have left its borders (though I'm going to Montreal next year).

Preventing foreign born citizens from running for president is xenophobic nonsense that should be repealed. The only person this could possibly apply to in the near future is Arnold Schwarzenegger, and the requirement's only good aspect is that it has prevented Schwarzenegger from running for president thus far. He would not win a presidential election, and while most Americans wouldn't have an inherent problem with a foreign born candidate, no foreign born politicians have the potential to win the presidency in the near future.

And I was born in the states.

If foreign born people can't become President, someone might want to inform Ted Cruz.
Maybe you meant naturalized citizens?

Naturalized citizens should be allowed to run as POTUS.

However, people of dual citizenship should NOT be allowed hold political office. This is more of an issue outside the United States.

Of course. The other reason that clause was put in place was fear of some European lord immigrating and in stating some form of monarchy. So I doubt even the founders would disagree with removing that clause in 2015...not that it matters what a bunch of dead for over a century guys would want.

Yes, there is literally no logical argument for barring persons who were not born in the United States from running and holding political office in the United States in 2015.

Yes to all three questions in the poll. Foreign-born citizens should be allowed to become president provided that they've lived in the U.S. for 20+ years and given up any foreign citizenship.

No, no, yes. I don't think someone who was not born here or born abroad to American parents will ever have the "institutional understanding" of who we are as a nation and our history and values. The POTUS is the head of state and must exemplify our shared history and values. If we were a parliamentary democracy, I would be fine with a foreign-born PM and an "all-American" president.

Someone whose family did not live in America in the mid-20th century really doesn't "get" our fraught understanding of race and the role it plays in society, for example. A lot of first and second generation immigrants (including some in this forum) just don't get it and never will. The same goes for other quirky Americanisms like the role of guns in society, and the place of religion in public and private life.
