Retail politics is much easier in a small state like Vermont. This could simply be a Republican who benefited from Sanders's constituent services, or who possibly met him at some point and came away with a favorable impression and voted for him based on that.

Dairy farmer living in Essex County who is a longtime Vermont Republican from a Republican family. He appreciates Sanders' honesty and sees him as down to earth, so votes for him.
