Was in the Conservatives, but this seems like a better fit. Grin

Some things we need to do pretty soon.

Elect a Party Leader

With an election likely right around the corner, we need to elect a party leader who will top our list for the upcoming vote and serve as our prime ministerial. They should be fairly dedicated to participating actively in the game and campaigning on behalf of our goals. Does everyone think it's best if at least for this election, the whole party membership votes? And please announce if you're standing and/or nominate someone.

Develop our Platform

So far we have a basic outline of our platform, but we should develop it a bit more as have the Worker's Party and Conservatives. I encourage everyone to pitch in ideas for this. In general, however, I think we should avoid being a redux of the U.S. Democratic Party and pursue the course of a more centrist European liberal party, with a mix of classical liberalism and left-liberalism.

I do believe I could help form a good path for the party, so I'm running for leader.

The platform will be a work in progress, however, it will contain the basic values of ensuring liberty for all and promising good government for all. I call on all members of the party to help with fleshing the platform out in more detail.

Thank you!

Some basic ideas our party should probably support.

-Reducing trade barriers
-Preserving and protecting our ecosystems, including the Amazon Rainforest
-Support for small business
-Tax breaks for the middle and working class
-Support for indigenous communities and culture
-Investment in renewable energy
-Support for gay marriage and abortion rights
-Poverty support for those who need it
-Support universal health care but with availability of private options
-A reduced, more efficient military
-Pursuing human rights and peace abroad

Biggest dividing issue for us could be trade barriers, would we support NAFTA type deals?

I'd say yes - support for free trade seems pretty definitional for a liberal party.

I nominate Talleyrand for party leader (he seems to basically be taking on that role already and is an PM in the provisional parliament).

I tend to agree with SJoyce on this.

Yeah, support for free trade, at least in principle would probably have to be a key tenet for a liberal party. It wouldn't mean we'd unilaterally approve every bill of that nature, but we'd generally be looking for ways to remove trade barriers.

I'll accept X's nomination for leader only if we decide to separate the parliamentary party and the organization, sort of like the Socialists are planning to do. You could have a chairman to run the party itself, and a parliamentary leader to run our group of MPs and head the ticket. I'd rather be the latter really.

Do people want the parliamentary leader to be party leader too or would they rather see the roles divided?

I think it'd make sense to split the roles.

Hmmm I'm not sure, in a parliamentary system the two are often the one in the same. You could have a parliamentary leader and a chairman.

They do it that way in Australia, IIRC.

And I fully support Talleyrand for Parliamentary leader, whilst I take the Chairman position.

Vague-ish platform (modeled off European liberal parties) discussing welfare and economics. Let me know what y'all think.

That looks fantastic, SJoyce. I've gone ahead and put it in the platform (although we can have a vote on it if there are any objections).

Does anyone else want to contest the parliamentary leadership position and chairman position? (I'm assuming we're okay with organizing the party that way).
