Any takers on this?  I have to assume that WV, TN, AR, and possibly LA stay Dem, while NJ, CT, and Maine go R?

Despite trailing in the polls, Gore pulls off a narrow victory against Pataki, by running a populist campaign in contrast to Pataki's coldness and vagueness. Due to right-wing dissatisfaction, Pat Buchanan takes four states in the South. Nader does slightly worse than Buchanan, but wins no states.

Why does that look so eerily close to the 1948 election map?

289 - 249
George Pataki(R-NY)/George Voinovich(R-OH) - 50.31%
Al Gore(D-TE)/Bill Richardson(D-NM) - 46.03%

Other: 3.66%

2.41% swing Republican -> Minnesota swing

Meanwhile, New Mexico is held back by heavier campaigning by Richardson and Wisconsin is won by less than 15,000 votes.
