Fact: In Making of Modern Zionism, which chronicles chronologically the main thinkers and philosophers of Zionism, Herzl is only profiled in chapter 9 (out of 17), and gets a grand total of 12 pages devoted to him. Which goes to show how critical he was to Zionist thought (not very). He was the first marketer of Zionism, but even there he wasn't very successful at it.

It can also of course be questioned whether or not he was a true Zionist, given that he was not particularly wedded to the idea of Palestine as a home state (hence the rather hilarious Uganda episode).

Overall: meh.

Nothing inherently wrong with the idea of Zionism, especially early on, independent of what mainstream Zionism has become.
