Yes, people will assume the Muslim is someone very well integrated and Westernized because those are the only Muslims that could get near the Presidency, whereas Evangelical signals Fundi to most atheists and liberal Christians/Jews.
The relevant comparison would be one with some adjective attached to Muslim as well, like Conservative/Traditional Muslim (or even Mainline).
Faced with the choice between a Fundamentalist Muslim or an Evangelical Christian the evangelical would win by a huge margin.
