Oh c'mon. At the time he probably thought German victory was inevitable (as did many other serious people). History is grey and he did the right thing under the circumstances. He didn't have a crystal ball to look in the future and see that Germany would be defeated.
If you live in a minor country like that and aren't a communist or Jew/ethnic minority is makes sense to join the winning side and secure your place in the New Order while you still can.
