Yes, it should be defunded (Cares about human life; sane)

Anyway, the bill failed 53-46. Joe Donnelly and Joe Manchin were the only Democrats who supported the Republican defunding push. Mark Kirk voted against it, so did the Democratic anti-abortion Senators Heidi Heitkamp and Bob Casey Jr.

My Senators did the righteous vote (sane pro-life conservatarian)

Any pro-life politician who voted against the measure should be ashamed.

Why? Cancer testing is pro-life.

Don't confuse pro-life and pro-birth.

I'm glad this bill failed. We Democrats have once again stood up to the Republicans' War on Women, and we must continue the fight to protect women's reproductive rights.

The Republicans are on your side.

Since when has legalizing abortion been in the beliefs of most republicans?

Not most registered Republicans, but most GOP politicians.  Republican-appointed justices handed us Roe v. Wade, and the current SCOTUS, though it is mostly Republican appointees, won't overturn it.  The GOP controlled all branches of government a decade ago and did nothing then too.

Roe is probably gone if the GOP wins the presidency in 2016. I don't see how Ginsburg makes it through 2020, and you can probably get past the Senate with a Huntsman-type - clearly pro-life, but otherwise quite moderate.

The Republican establishment wants Roe v. Wade upheld.  They view pro-life people such as myself as an inconvenience at best and want us to shut up and not question the GOP leadership.  They really want me to vote for them, even though they will not keep their promises.

Why?  Because I believe that every human has certain inalienable rights, and the right to life is the most important.

Planned Parenthood performs abortions and strips people of their most basic right as a human being.  This is the human rights issue of our time and I will never compromise on it.

Ashamed for what? Not cutting money for birth control that helps lead to fewer abortions?

Yet the overwhelming majority of republican congressmen are solidly pro-life. All but three republican senators just voted to defund the biggest abortion provider in the country.

There is clearly no merit to your theory.

Your argument has no merit.

Public opinion on abortion is that the current law is too lax, so actions such as this one that are seen as tightening it up are beneficial politically. But that opinion is not as draconian as going for a complete ban, yet the base is in favor of it. If Roe were overturned, Republicans in many areas would have to choose between being in favor of banning abortion and losing the general election and not banning abortion and losing the primary. That is not a choice the establishment wants the party to face because a primary establishment goal is not about what to do with power, but with having power. What is unknown, and indeed is unknowable, is whether the establishment's desire to avoid the political fallout that would come from having responsibility for abortion that the courts now have is greater than their desire for restricting abortion.

This thread is just fuc**** miserable.

Planned parenthood is one of THE most cost-effective and just effective providers of healthcare for women, especially, low-income women. But of course, let's have a bunch of guys who will never get pregnant, never have to worry have the gall to dictate to women what happens in their bodies and make THAT the issue. As opposed to the family planning and cancer screening that is the majority of their work.

The promotion of sensible family planing and sex education is key to reducing abortions, oh ... but what about your right to righteous indignation?!

I would take the so-called pro-life advocates seriously if they actually engaged with those, including Planned Parenthood, who want to prevent pregnancies.

Ashamed for not cutting money to an organization that performs abortions.  If someone is against abortion, as Casey and Heitkamp claim to be, this is the only rational position.

They know that Obama will veto funding cuts, so they can please the base while not changing anything.

But of course, let's have a bunch of guys who will never get pregnant, never have to worry have the gall to dictate to women what happens in their bodies and make THAT the issue.

We have every right to tell women they can't murder their children. Rapists don't have the right to rape, thieves don't have the right to steal, school shooters don't have the right to murder their classmates, and women don't have the right to murder their children. We have both a right and a duty to stop people from engaging in abominable crimes against humanity like abortion.

The promotion of sensible family planing and sex education is key to reducing abortions, oh ... but what about your right to righteous indignation?!

Read this:

http://www.lifenews.com/2012/02/17/studies-birth-control-contraception-dont-cut-abortions/

The Guttmacher Institute, which is affiliated with Planned Parenthood, regularly reports that a majority of women who get abortions are on contraception. Researcher Stanley Kershaw says that users of contraception ''appear to have been more motivated to prevent births than were nonusers''.

What we, as a society, really need to do is acknowledge that sex is only for procreation. The same mentality that leads people to consider birth control an acceptable option leads them to consider abortion an acceptable option.

If you don't want or can't take care of children, the only truly acceptable option is to not have sex in the first place.
