I know, such a classic high-school debate question.

Yes, it's excessive animal cruelty, and unlike zoos, the captivity of the animals brings no tangible benefits.

I don't have anything in principle against animal performers, but animal cruelty is a valid concern in many instances.  I'd guess I'd need to know more about the psychology and behavior of the various animals involved to know where to draw the line.

What shua said. I know enough about elephants, specifically, to know that using them in circuses is unjustifiable.

What Shua said.  Any acts of cruelty is wrong, obviously, but I'm pretty sure not all circuses are cruel to their animals so I can't agree to a complete ban.

Not all of them but it should be more regulated so animals aren't treated cruelly

Nope, and most restrictions designed to combat 'cruelty to animals' (aside from laws against bestiality obviously) should be abolished too.

So torture the animals all you want.  Just don't have sex with them.

Wait.  If they are in a circus, then arent they by definition not wild, unless they are up to some wild stuff.

But seriously though, answer 1.

No, the animals help form part of the circus tradition, it wouldn't be the same without them.

No, but people shouldn't want to go to circuses with wild animals, because animals should have a better life.

Circuses are stupid anyway.

Is this primarily because of how they are kept/transported in between shows?

Partly, but also because of how (healthy, wild) elephants are socialized and the extent to which they need a specific herd structure to be psychologically sound.

Am I? I love my cats as much as the next guy and would never do a thing to hurt them unless it was absolutely necessary. On the other hand, they're my property (well, my family's property, but the principle is the same), and I cannot see anything in them that means they deserve to be gifted some of the same rights as humans. As for other animals, well, that is not my concern for they are not my property.

Yet, despite being an 'unreal' poster, I still seem able to post. Rather bizarre don't you think?
