What shua said. I know enough about elephants, specifically, to know that using them in circuses is unjustifiable.

Is this primarily because of how they are kept/transported in between shows?

Partly, but also because of how (healthy, wild) elephants are socialized and the extent to which they need a specific herd structure to be psychologically sound.
