I've used the obvious debate around here as the first round, but it is a good question.

We often value the big cities for everything related to a state or nation the most, especially here on Atlas where most people are city-folk.

But do those cities really deserve to overshadow the rest of the State they are in? Or is there so much more the rest of the State has that one city simply cannot cover? These are the questions I seek to find out the opinion on.

Case in point: the divide between New York City (and I guess Long Island too) and the Upstate, which is probably the most well-known divide.

So which one will it be? The Big Apple or the side with Niagara Falls, the Finger Lakes, the College towns like Ithaca, the Catskill Mountains, and the Hudson River Valley?

Fire away!

It's hilarious how some people think New York is just Manhattan. It actually has the least dense county in any state east of or touching the Mississippi. It's Hamilton County, and it's entirely within the  outer boundaries (there's some private land inside) of largest state park in the country, the Adirondacks.

This particular Upstate New Yorker must give the nod to NYC. The thing about Hudson is that it has a train station, with hourly service to NYC (a two hour train ride). So in that sense, it is a nice balance - sort of a tiny bit of Manhattan, up the river.

Alabny's near the Adirondacks and other scenic areas, but is still a decent-sized town.  A medium-sized city with some diversity and big city amenities, but obviously much more relaxed than NYC.  I also have a cousin living in the area.

Obviously NYC by leaps and bounds.  That's no slam on Upstate, though, which is a fine area and far better than Long Island.  It's just that you can't compete with The City.

My two best friends both live upstate, and I find the city hectic and uninviting.

I find Albany rather drab, and it's downtown a shell, desecrated by the Empire State square. Now, the really neat town is Troy in that area.

Upstate. I love the Adirondacks. Also, Essex New York is so wonderful. Took the ferry from there to Charlotte Vermont once. Amazing experience.
