This particular Upstate New Yorker must give the nod to NYC. The thing about Hudson is that it has a train station, with hourly service to NYC (a two hour train ride). So in that sense, it is a nice balance - sort of a tiny bit of Manhattan, up the river.

What is so cool about the Albany area?

Alabny's near the Adirondacks and other scenic areas, but is still a decent-sized town.  A medium-sized city with some diversity and big city amenities, but obviously much more relaxed than NYC.  I also have a cousin living in the area.

I find Albany rather drab, and it's downtown a shell, desecrated by the Empire State square. Now, the really neat town is Troy in that area.
