The American socialist movement must really be in a sad shape if they have to include Jimmy Hoffa among their heroes... Roll Eyes

As for my own opinion: extremely mixed. Hoffa was a brand of trade union bureaucrat that really doesn't exist anymore - the militant bureaucrat. He safely guarded the right to strike over grievances, and wasn't afraid to fight, to a point. Of course, his gangster-ties and use of mob violence to suppress opponents within the IBT is disgusting and unforgivable, but that kind of goes without saying. He's a lot like John L. Lewis, actually. A strangely militant, conservative union bureaucrat.

Voted FF on the whole - the squalid oppression that he opposed (and I'd add that the Carnegies and Fricks were far worse) wasn't any better. It is a mixed bag, and you have good and bad, and honestly in a country like America he's what you're going to get if someone rises to the top of a "movement" like that.

Yes, "American" and "FF" are quite opposed these days, aren't they?

I was thinking of another two, but that works too.

Why would Republicans like him?  I'm pretty darn sure he was a Democrat, considering his background as a union boss.

The Teamsters supported a number of GOP nominees until like the 1990's or 2000's. In reference to what little I've read (Wikipedia), their support lay in Northern state Republican Governors who supported road and highway construction, as well as low oil prices. They issued a statement in like 2000 or 2008 saying they wouldn't endorse the Republican nominee for President despite his support for oil  because they at that point saw global warming as a bigger issue than support low gas prices. The Kennedy Regime, beginning in the 1950's when Bobert was Senate Majority Counsel began pursuing Hoffa and his ilk, and at least as far as the "Hoffa" film goes, the impression was given that Hoffa had supported Nixon semi-regularly. A number of other labor leaders endorsed Nixon over McGovern in '72 for cultural and foreign policy reasons.

This should hopefully serve as an explanation for both of you in regards to my semi-ironic post.
