It seems for American Progressives and liberals, Canadian health care is the ideal goal (despite it being not all that better). However, France, has what's widely regarded as the best health care system in the world - why don't they seek to emulate that?

If you think that attempting to convince the public on a Canadian or Swedish import is difficult, just imagine a politician trying to persuade the public that "We should copy the French model!" Hatred of all things French will be first and foremost in people's minds. It's completely politically unfeasible.

The French system is far from perfect either. Medical prices have been rising pretty fast in recent decades, since doctors and pharmaceutical companies know that government will cover most of these expenses. Of course it's still miles ahead of the US, but I'd say eliminating the middle man (private health care providers) like the UK did is more effective, at least in theory.

Canada is English speaking and borders the U.S. so people are more familiar with it. The French healthcare system might as well be the Martian healthcare system for all intents and purposes.

You can't import healthcare systems from other countries, period.

We have an entire infrastructure which we all rely on.  You can't throw it away and start from scratch.  That's what people fail to realize.  You can only make small changes over time and try to change the trajectory.  That's the point of Obamacare.

Wait times and rationing are a chronic problem here.

I think the Canadian system is great if you are healthy or very very sick, but if you have a chronic condition or a painful, non-life threatening issue (e.g.  Need a knee replaced), it can definitely fail you.

"French" is an extremely dirty word for American conservatives.

And of course the British version is even better.

Canada's system is barely better than ours in balance and would be worse for millions of people. If we ever go to the great lengths it would require to completely tear down our system, it should be to emulate the actual best in the world (the United Kingdom) not one that's also down in the 30s with us.
