Say Hillary and Biden are locked in a tight race into next spring. Who (if at all) does Obama endorse?

I would think he has to throw his support behind his VP...

If he chooses to endorse somebody, it's gonna be Biden.

He won't endorse, not until a clear winner is decided.

Biden may be his guy, but if he doesn't stand a chance against Hillary, I see no reason for an endorsement.

I'm guessing that he'll endorse the candidate in mid-April or so.

Obama will not make an endorsement until it is clear that one candidate or the other is clearly, without a doubt, going to win the nomination, and WOULD win the nomination no matter what he does.  What Obama could not afford would be for a Presidential candidate to have obtained the nomination by virtue of his endorsement; that would earn him the enmity of the supporters of that other candidate and negatively impact the tone of the Democratic campaign in the fall.

His endorsement will be gold for Biden in SC. Hopes he choses to do so, so IL can join with them.

Agreed.

Also, Biden has a clear path to the nomination. Getting second in Iowa and first in South Carolina with Sanders winning New Hampshire? A three-way Democratic primaries is far more likely to go to the Convention than five or six serious Republicans(Bush, Walker, Rubio, Huckabee, Paul, and Kasich).

Pretty sure a clear winner was decided at the time of that Clinton endorsement - Gore was facing only token opposition from his left, nothing that would seriously contest his path to the nomination.

Don't ruin their wet dreams of a competitive Dem primary with facts.

Ah yes. Those pesky facts about Hillary being so corrupt that even with huge establishment support plus raking in huge sums of money her main opponent, a socialist, has managed to surge in the polls despite having significantly less money than her. The fact that her aides are worried about Biden, a man nobody seriously considered until recently, jumping into the race.

Hillary is starting to implode. Every Democrat will attack her in the debates, Don't be surprised if Obama, who has bad blood with the Clintons from 2008, chooses to endorse Biden to keep an establishment Democrat in power over Sanders.

When a socialist who has less than a dollar for every four dollars you've raised and has nowhere near the amount of endorsements and establishment backing you have causes your poll numbers to decrease for over three months straight, I think you have a problem.

I know. Just wait till a real establishment supported Democrat who's not a socialist gets in the race. Hillary won't be looking too pretty soon.

Basically, we need to see how much of her support is really solidified. If a viable alternative shows up, will people flee her?

There is absolutely no way whatsoever that Obama would endorse Clinton before the nomination has been locked up- you don't treat your Vice President that way.

Unless you're Eisenhower.

During the 1960 Presidential election, a reporter asked Eisenhower if he could give an example of a major idea of Nixon's that he had heeded. Eisenhower responded with the flip comment, "If you give me a week, I might think of one." (Wiki)

Not endorsing Nixon would have been many times worse...

This was more a joke. Ike did not want JFK as his sucessor. Both men disliked each other.
