Sure.

Are there any prominent/national/high-level ones?  No.

Seeing as these disorders occur across a wide-spectrum, I find it highly believable that we have national politicians who have some sort of "high functioning" type of Autism/Aspergers.

Very true.  I would say with 99.999...% certainty that at least one state rep or senator has autism or Asperger's, and it's more likely than not at least one Congressman has it.  You can be a decent public speaker even with Asperger's (especially with training), and if you have people to help you fundraise, it's more than possible I would think.

Nah, just Nixon. Though since I've got Aspergers myself, maybe I shouldn't generalize, even with Nixon. He definitely was an introvert at the very least, though his public speaking skill points towards something that isn't Aspergers. Not sure what he had, but he certainly became paranoid and his utter lack of empathy (even beyond most Presidents) is certainly something.

Isn't it that people with Asperger's have empathy, but from an intellectual level, not an emotional one?

Depends on how the Aspergers manifests. I for example have a lot of emotional empathy for someone with Aspergers (I cry when I see something sad, I get mad when I see something I consider an injustice, etc), while others have more intellectual empathy; they know they're supposed to empathize, so they do.

I'm not an expert by any means, but all the people with Asperger's I've known so far are very emotional. I felt pretty detached compared to them, even though I'm already far more fragile than the average person.

Of course, autism is a spectrum so it's very hard to make these kinds of generalizations.

Something about how the topic at hand is a social construct, so yeah, sure, why not?

I don't think any current politician has Asperger's/autism.

I'm not saying that Mitt Romney has Asperger's, but he certainly has some significant autistic traits. Same with Al Gore.

George Washington, Abe Lincoln, Thomas Jefferson and Al Gore did. And if I'm ever elected to office, add my name to the list.

Maybe, but it would have to be the kind of high-functioning autistic whose natural troubles with socialization, etc., are juuuust subtle enough to get passed off as a lack of charisma or something like that.

I find it comforting that psychological and medical analysis doesn't require actually interacting with or observing the subject anymore, and in fact can be done by Internet posters sitting at their homes. Look how far we've come!

A good chunk of the forum and those on this thread are at least partially autistic, including myself.  We have the right to make this thread.

IMO (not an expert, but what do they know) David Cameron clearly suffers from obsessive compulsive disorder, Alexis Tsipras from ADHD and Pope Alexander VI from antisocial personality disorder.

I don't see what the problem is with the thread.  Sure, it's just speculation, but personality types (and I would count "autistic" as one) is something you can weigh in on without a medical degree.  It's an interesting topic to discuss, I think.
