I like him. I feel like he gets a lot of undeserved s**t, mainly silly accusations of him being a power hungry opportunist (which, hey, he probably is, just not for reasons people say). There was really no way the NDP's position right now could've been predicted at the time he jumped ship.

FF. One of Canada's greats. While he isn't Jack Layton, I have immense hopes for PM Muclair. His straight talking style and in depth knowledge make him uniquely qualified to be PM. I've heard him called Canada's Obama, and I honestly think that's a good analogy.

I think he's a great guy with excellent policies, and I really hope he keeps the beard. We need more bearded politicians across the world. Hope he's the next PM, whether now or in 2019.

FF. I'd advise anyone against making predictions on the election though. At this point in the 1993 campaign the PCs were tied with the Liberals in the 30s, in 2006 Martin was heading for another term and in 2011 it looked set to be a repeat of 2008. Not to mention the polling errors in recent provincial elections.

Better than the alternatives, but he's taken the party in a worse direction on several issues, namely Israel, taxation, and moderate heroism on marijuana. I'd probably still vote NDP if I were in Canada because of a total lack of leftist alternatives.

The global media should be banned from ever uttering the phrase "(country)'s Obama".

Not particularly exciting, but still one of the better politicians Canada has to offer these days.

Isn't the NDP's current policy plank actually pretty centrist and fluffy?

Yeah I agree with that assessment. Mulcair has dragged his party to the centre in an attempt to consolidate Layton's gains and challenge for government. The biggest proposals in the pre-campaign period were:
  • Cut corporate tax for businesses making < $500 000
  • Create state run daycares and charge $15/day
  • Reverse the Old Age Pension age increase from 65 to 67
