Edwards probably would not have made that same error, since he met Rielle Hunter when he was a candidate for President.

But he would have screwed up in some different way.

Obama would have been a possibility, if only to get Republican Senators to vote against a black man. Kerry had considered Dick Gephardt, who likely would have gotten congressional approval (similar background to Ford.)

Hmm... It depends when it happens. 2006-2007? After a disastrous midterm? 2005-2006? When the party has new life? 2007-2008, when the party desperately needs a great uniter?

Any time after the first year or two, I think Howard Dean or Ron Wyden would be in the top three. If Deval Patrick is elected to something, maybe him. O'Malley is a possibility, too.
