In 1940, FDR announces not run for reelection. Vice President John Nance Garner captures the Democratic nomination by a close margin. On November 5, Republican Wendell Willkie defeats Garner with 51-47% in the general election. During his term, President Willkie keeps, as promised, most New Deal programs, but makes them more efficient. The events concerning WW2 remain exactly the same.

In 1944, Republicans nominate President Willkie again. He replaces VP Charles McNary, who died in February 1944, with California Governor Earl Warren (Tom Dewey serves as Attorney General in Willkie's administration; Arthur Vandenberg is Sec. of State). As the Democrats are bitterly divided, they turn to former President Roosevelt, who finally accepts the nomination. Their slogan is "FDR: proven leadership in a time of crises". Senator Harry S. Truman is nominated for Vice President.

How is the election turning out? (Willkie does not die in October and is in good health; I don't know how FDR's health would have been in 1944 without being president).

Intersting scenario. I see Willkie winning because of the successes on the battlefield and the incumbency.

Wendell Willkie (inc.)/Earl Warren: 393 EV. (54.5%)
Franklin D. Roosevelt/Harry S. Truman: 138 EV. (45.0%)
