Both David Owen and David Steele often complained that because of their portrayal in the "Spitting Image", people stopped taking them seriously.

He destroyed his own career in 1981.

Spitting Image would be nowhere near as good now, would it? Fewer characters around.

I think it was far more destructive to Steel's career than Owen's. Better to be seen as an evil mastermind than as an infantile buffoon.

Weirdly enough, Steel would IRL outmaneuver Dr Death; so the writers basically got that aspect wrong.

There have been numerous attempts to revive Spitting Inage-esque shows, but of varying quality and normally replacing puppetry with eerily soulless CGI.
