Just to balance off with Philip's "should the federal govt be abolished" thread. I voted no, BTW. Too bureaucratic.

If the states were abolished, so would their federal government, and we'd just have thousands of counties running things. Sounds good to me, but I think I'll vote no because of the military issue.

No. You cannot imagine how many problems this would occur - imagine the arguments between who would get to keep certain city names.

Indeed. According to various sources, there are 92 locations officially named Springfield and 38 officially Census-recognized Springfields. Yikes.

Yeah but there are less than 92 states. Which kind of blows up the whole chain of reasoning that had been developing up till now.

Well, it's the Census-recognized part that counts.

There are 24 Springfields in the United States with their own ZIP codes, for instance. Many of the 92 I previously mentioned are minor locations, like a fork in the road where one of the roads is named Springfield Road and there is a gas station. There's a chance that the people who live in some of these places may not even know they're in a Springfield.

The shouldn't be abolished...they could still function well as administrative districts, much like those in France.  But I think we should have one set of laws for the entire country, and shouldn't given states disproportionate representation.

If I was president I would kick Utah out of the union because it blatantly allows polygamy (this has been in a few news items, they only prosecuted that 1 guy a few years ago, there are still thousands of other families like his that they tolerate). When Utah became a state in 1896 it was with the understanding that they would never allow polygamy, since they are defying this, I say throw them out. They could turn it into their own little theocratic republic.

Do they give state recognition to poligamous marriages?
No, it's just a bunch of people living together.
