Patty Murray, with Byrd as a close second.

Seriously. There are a few nuts on the GOP side in the Senate, and a few nuts on both sides in the House, but I can't think of any Democrat Senator I would describe as 'nuts'.
It is true Byrd comes closest, in that his manner is a little odd, but that's just the old-time Southerner. His positions and votes are certainly very normal Center-Right stuff.

I would sort of agree. Senate nuts are less nutty as House nuts because the whole state has to approve of them.

Generally although their are those in the GOP senate (Coburn, Bunning) that are about as far out there as those in the House (Musgrove, etc)

You are both correct. In general state-wide election creates a more moderate Senator, but there are a few GOP states that are just very extreme.

There aren't really any Democratic equivalents for Sam Brownback, Jim Bunning, Tom Coburn, or Rick Santorum.

That was really funny!
Funny, but true. Also unsurprising given that we have one moderate party and one extreme party...

When was Byrd in the KKK? 50 or 60 years ago right?
It's kind of silly to continue to hold that against him after he's reformed his views.
I don't think Byrd is a nut at all, he is very passionate and the greatest historian in the entire Senate.

On the GOP side, for 2016, look out for Gov. Phill Kline (KS), Gov. Ralph Reed (GA), Gov. JD Hayworth (AZ), Sen. David Vitter (LA), among others.
