All students were forced to listen to Ted Cruz's speech there in which he started his presidential campaign, it's the world's largest Evangelical Christian university (founded by Jerry Falwell), and now it will be the same deal... but with Bernie Sanders?

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/atheist-bernie-sanders-to-speak-at-evangelical-liberty-university_55c2bdc6e4b0f1cbf1e3bd63?kvcommref=mostpopular

Most unusual. Very curious indeed.

Sanders is pushing economics issues. There's absolutely nothing connecting Evangelicals to fiscal reactionary politics the Republicans have been pushing.

I expect this will be the very point he is pushing.

Sure, why not.

I have immense respect for people who take their message to those they know probably don't agree with them. More people should do this.

He's also gone of Fox News. He's really about getting his messaging out there. Meanwhile, Hillary didn't want the pathetic 6 primary debates they might eventually schedule.

Really? When Republicans go to speak to Blacks or Hispanics you don't just make fun of them?

As for the article, why does it say he is atheist? He's Jewish...

What? Many Jews in the US are very secular.

It's very possible and common to be atheist and Jewish; however, I don't think Sanders identifies as an atheist. I think the article has been corrected. He isn't very religious, though.

Bernie's got the most character of anyone running.  I have THOUGHT about switching my party registration to Democrat and voting for him.  He's anti-free trade and anti-war, so I like that.  I'm not a socialist and I'm not a social liberal, but I have more respect for him, as a human being, than I do for most of the other candidates.

Sanders is pushing economics issues. There's absolutely nothing connecting Evangelicals to fiscal reactionary politics the Republicans have been pushing.

Evangelicals have gotten the shaft from the GOP. Generally low in SES, they have paid the economic price for supporting reactionaries. Even with global warming, they are more southern -- and they are more likely to experience harm because the American South has brutally-hot summers as it is. They are also more likely to become cannon fodder in war than other white people. Meanwhile, evangelicals have been losing on the 'cultural issues'.

Poaching the voters who have gotten the least but given the most is good politics, If Barack Obama could pick up Hispanic voters who had most believed in the "Opportunity Society" of George W. Bush and gotten burned most by the  financial collapse... maybe Bernie Sanders can appeal to a populism that could emerge anew from its recent nadir.

I do not have a problem with evangelicals making more money because of fairer pay so that they can put more money into the collection plates at church.

Yeah, this reminds me of Rand Paul speaking to the NAACP. It's a cool gesture but ultimately meaningless.

Bernie Sanders has a right to discuss his agenda to suppress wages, create a depression, and spend our way to bankruptcy.

His agenda?

No. Simply what Republicans do in practice.

I would only make fun of someone doing that if they went full Mitt Romney "who let the dogs out" awkward. I didn't necessarily like Rand's speaking to the NAACP but that wasn't because I wanted to mock him, I just didn't agree with his message. It was still good of him to try, though.

His positions on foreign policy are probably in line with what Evangelicals should believe.

Evangelicals are neocons due to support for the state of Israel and suspicion of the Iranian government system.

I'm an Evangelical and am not a neocon, there are a lot of us actually.  But applying Biblical principles to foreign policy would lead to the use of force being restricted to self-defense.

America hasn't gone to war for self-defense since 1775.

Jewish is more ethnic than religious.

But I do know Jews who go to temple, follow all the customs, but don't believe in God and think it's all metaphor but still believe the Tanakh is holy.

You silly goose!

I'm an atheist Jew and so is like everyone else out there.

You don't have to believe in God, the Bible, etc. in order to identify as Jewish. I, for example, am staunchly opposed all forms of religion, but still identify as a Jew culturally.
