Maybe like $40 or so?

I'm surprised by some prices. Unless you have some medical condition that requires special or custom built shoes or are a professional athlete why would you ever spend three figures on shoes?

I've always found the obsession with super expensive shoes to be really silly, as I do with the obsession over expensive fashion in general.

I pretty much always shop at discount shoe stores. Most of my shoes cost like $25 and last years. I spent $40 on a pair of boots during the winter and thought that was way too much, but for boots there aren't many options below that unless you get them at a thrift store.

Not more than 30-40€ (not a woman).

I also just have 6 pairs or something (incl. a pair of sandals for home and 1 black pair for "official" stuff like business meetings, funerals, weddings, etc).

120€, I think, but not for "everyday" shoes.

Want to know a little secret? If you, you know, actually walk a lot then cheap shoes are a false economy. Financially speaking you are actually much better off buying well made shoes that will last forever than continually buying new cheap pairs.

That's true. Target sells some sneakers really cheap, like $15-20, but when I was buying them they were constantly falling apart. I realized I'm better off getting shoes at twice the price, they last more twice as long.

But there's still a limit. $40 shoes and $100 shoes will probably last about the same.

A couple years ago I bought a pair of Reebok Zigtech tennis shoes for probably around $90, and they were/are the most comfortable, gliding tennis shoes I've owned. They looked good too. I wore them everywhere, but unfortunately they're a little too scuffed up now, so I use them for running (like every day) and they are still going strong for that!

Normally, I don't do that, but I wanted to try them and was very satisfied.

I also got a pair of good Nike tennis shoes on sale for like $20, but I forget what the original price was. Probably closer to $50.

To my knowledge, 80 dollars. They lasted me about twice as long as normal, though. I consider that worth it as a result.

Indeed

I spent about $150 on snow boots 6 years ago, and they are still in great shape despite being used daily every winter.

Somewhere around $250.

That's what a decent winter boot or dress shoe costs.

I was on the cross country team at my private high school, so obviously you had to have the latest $200 Asics.

Other than that, probably ~$150 on dress shoes.

$130 for running shoes. I miss the days when I could get a good pair for only $50, but I have to be somewhat particular or I will injury myself and going to the doctor will end up being more expensive than the shoes.

Running costs me around 15¢ a mile in shoes, which compared to other leisure activities is still fairly reasonable.

Just over 300.  335 if you count the pair of cedar inserts I got for their storage.  They were made by hand, by a little old man in Tuscany who sings opera while he works.  Over the 12 years I have had them, I've only worn them to three weddings (including my own), one funeral (not my own), and about ten job interviews.  I probably should wear them more in order to get my money's worth.

About $80 for winter boots, no more than $65 for everday shoes.

The insinuation by some here that fashion or caring about how you look is only for women is ludicrous.

$150, though you'd be surprised by the quality of stuff you can find in second-hand stores. For example, I got a pair of vintage Kodiaks much like the ones below for $12. These pictures are a step down though... the colour and shine of mine are just interesting. These ones look boring.

They're the most heavy-duty boots I've ever owned and will last forever.

I dropped nearly four Benjamins on the purple LeBron 9's from a shady Chinese company because I needed something for my light blue outfits which were my go-to at the time. Not a great decision, but the amount of compliments they got from strangers far outnumbered the amount of times $100 dress shoes will be worn in total.

Can I pip back in here to say that the first picture Hagrid's posted is a horrible misaapropriation of boots? I mean, Hell, I'll admit to often wearing boots for purely visual purposes, but never would I so bastardized the workboot as to wear it like that.

I know. Sigh... they're really more suited to a pair of skinnies. Purple heart

I have definitely spent over three figures for shoes, but the qualities that make that worthwhile are strict. I'd only do it if I absolutely loved them, knew I would get good use out of them, couldn't foresee getting them any cheaper, and I was desperate. By desperate I'm referring to rarity - if I'm having a really difficult time finding a certain style of shoe that I know I will love and wear, I will pay good money when I cross paths with it because I know the chance might not come again. High price is normally a deal breaker, but rarity can trump that.

That said, for men's shoes I'd never spent more than $75. Granted that I was a bit of a slob because I didn't care, but there you go.

This exactly. It's sort of thing in the United States where Americans wear cheap sneakers with everything.

I played a lot of basketball in my late teens early twenties.  I spent over a hundred (early 90s dollars) several times on good basketball shoes, but never more than $120.  We played at sketchy places sometimes, no need to tempt.
