I go back and forth every day. There's no way to know, but I do think Harper benefits the most from a long campaign. If anything he has at least proven that his party is a stable choice that can mostly weather storms. I don't see the CPC dropping below 30% in the polls. The other parties can. And being prone to that is problematic when we're talking about a generally volatile electorate.

At the end of the day, voters could flock to the tried and tested option. On the other hand, the appetite for change is strong, and if one of the left-leaning parties breaks out from the pack like the NDP seemed to be doing not too long ago, we could be looking at a majority leftist government.

Wikipedia reports that there are 14 vacancies in the Senate and 8 in the House of Commons.

Why is this? Plague? Scandals? The Olds kicking the bucket?

Senate: There's an expense scandal going on, so Harper isn't appointing new Senators to avoid controversy.

House of Commons: A bunch of retiring MP's resigned their seats rather than finishing out their term, knowing that the by-elections would be superseded by the real election. Oh and Dean Del Maestro was convicted of a crime and resigned.
