James Baker, if Powell as President is anything like Powell as Sec. State, he would be the worst on this list.

Although none of these people is capable of being Secretary of State, much less President, I say Powell for at least being a unifying figure.

Who would you have preferred Bush nominate Secretary of State?  Lugar?

This poll didn't give Democrats much of a choice.

Warren Christopher. Anyone who served in a Reagan or Bush administration is unacceptable to me.

And before I'm bashed for saying that, I loved Colin Powell as Sec of State for most of his tenure, a year ago I would have voted for him in this poll. But the man never fought back against the neo-cons (Rumsfeld, Cheney, Wolfowitz who were diametrically opposed to him). He should have resigned, not so the Dems would benefit but because the things the Rove Administration made him do were morally wrong. Even Christie Whitman had the decency to resign. He was a loyal soldier for too long and now I think he actually believes the goals of the Bushies.

There's a lot of good names.

Paul Wolfowitz (the most capable out there)
Christopher Cox (a bit arrogant, but knows his stuff)
Sam Brownback (a legit human rights advocate)
John Negroponte (though not necessarily qualified at the start of term 1, he is now)

What is it about John Negroponte that Bush loves so much? He's appointed the guy to like 6 different posts over the years. There's something weird about how he is always shuffled around, always being promoted.

He has never been Secretary of State and has not been nominated for that post.

Baker would be a lousy choice.  Rice might do well, as she's expirienced and intelligent, but I couldn't see her carry a full legacy without coming under fire from opposition and sh'ed probably get really stressed out.  Colin Powell, would probably make the best choice, he's got lots of expirience, he's intelligent, moderate, can keep his cool, and it would probably be a landslide for him.

I guess I drifted off topic. I was refering a post above, which mentioned Negroponte. God what an awful name, he should change it. But my observations still apply.

What's so bad about "Black Bridge"? You prefer "Brown Back"? Smiley

I'm not sure I have a legitimate reason. Its just that everytime I hear the name "Negroponte" I get these negative vibes. I know I'm being ridiculous, but I can't help it.

And besides his name, which he really is always being promoted. Is he really close to the Bush family or something? The guy has had like 6 different jobswith the administration over the past 4 years.
