Can we start using this term? States that are swingy, but you can generally assume will vote a certain way. For instance, NC is pink and Michigan is teal

What other states would fit in these categories?

Until recently Montana was pretty pink. In October 2010 they had 2 Dem senators, a Dem Executive branch, and Dem control of half of the legislature.

Maine is pretty teal now. 1 Pub Senator (No Dem Senator overall), Pub Governor, Pub control of half of the legislature, Pub control over half the Congressional seats.

Even though Atlas (or the media, depending on how you look at it) has inversed colors, we still refer to republican states on here as "red states".

I suppose Georgia would be entering media pink/Atlas teal, then.

Pink is a lighter shade of red.

Teal is not a lighter shade of blue. A lighter shade of blue is...light blue.

Statewide politics in MI have been deep Red as of late however.

Here's a map showing how much more Democratic/Republican a state (and DC) was compared to the national average in 2012:

D+20% or more:

Washington, D.C.
Hawaii
Vermont
New York
Rhode Island
Maryland

D+15% to D+20%:

California
Massachusetts

D+10% to D+15%:

Delaware
New Jersey
Connecticut
Illinois
Maine
Washington

D+5% to D+10%: I would call these official teal/Atlas pink states

Oregon
New Mexico
Michigan

D+5% to R+5%: Swing states

Minnesota
Wisconsin
Nevada
Iowa
New Hampshire
Pennsylvania
Colorado
Virginia
Ohio
Florida

R+5% to R+10%: Official pink/Atlas teal

North Carolina

R+10% to R+15%:

Georgia
Arizona
Missouri
Indiana
South Carolina

R+15% to R+20%:

Mississippi
Montana
Alaska
Texas

R+20% or more:

Louisiana
South Dakota
North Dakota
Tennessee
Kansas
Nebraska
Alabama
Kentucky
Arkansas
West Virginia
Idaho
Oklahoma
Wyoming
Utah

I still tend to think of states like Red-Republican and Blue-Democrat, so I think of Pink as light red. So North Carolina comes to mind. Teal states to me are Nevada, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin.

Virginia is on the path to becoming a teal state (Dem. Governor, 2 Dem. Senators).

Until recently? Montana still has a Democratic executive branch (apart from AG) and one Democratic Senator.

Anyway, everyone in this thread seems to be using different definitions of the terms.
