As someone who has been victimized by a dear relative who has died from cancer, it goes into remission. Just like HIV, it wont be the last we hear about Carter's cancer, especially brain cancer, which is deadly. But, hopefully he can still live out a healthy life with it, for his remaining days.

Unfortunately, once you get cancer, you have to expect death, eventhough it may not come.
