Wagner is going to crash and burn. She's a horrible politician with ties to GOP leadership and nothing to show for her time in the House.

It means her internals aren't good I think, she would have run otherwise.
Anyway, I think she's an overrated candidate deeply out of touch with the MO GOP, I wouldn't have been surprised if she would have been defeated in the primaries.

Wow! That is big news, and very unexpected (though less so given recent hesitation). McCaskill must be very happy right now. I'll still think of this race as a tossup for now, but a much more D-friendly tossup.

Would be ironic if she lost her House seat too.

This is when the GOP needs to get scared because of a trend starts of GOPers just assuming 2018 will be bad for them so star recruits don't run for senate and old guard house members retire like Ros already did you create a self defeating psychology that favors a dem wave like what happened in 2010 and especially in 2014

It would have to be an exceptionally horrendous night for the GOP in order for that to happen. She's a pretty good fit for my district, and she won by over 20% last time.

I know, but it is the kind of suburban, highly educated district that the DCCC is targeting and might turn on Trump faster than usual. Or maybe I'm completely confusing it with a different district.

Recruitment fail. The coming cycle is not going to be a good one for Republicans.

Another major recruitment fail. And MT Treasurer laughed when I said it was a bad sign Fox wasn't going to run against Tester. I wonder who the next big name to pass will be.

Eh, it's not like Hawley isn't still a formidable candidate albeit slightly weaker. But seeing big name Pubs like Duffy in WI, Fox in MT, Meehan in PA, and now Wagner in MO bow out might be an omen.

As for this race, it's becoming increasingly obvious that McCaskill needs to put her electioneering skills to work again and face Austin Petersen in the general.

From what it sounds reps in IN aren't lining up to run aganist Donnelly so look there for the next big recruitment fail

Suburban/Exurban St. Louis, when talking about West County (Chesterfield, Ballwin, Wildwood), portions of Mid County (Ladue, Frontenac, Clayton), and St. Charles County, are still GOP-friendly territory.
North County (Florissant, Ferguson, Hazelwood) is big-time Democratic, and South County (Affton, Oakville) is fairly swingy if slightly D-leaning.

Something in the GOP internals has all these Republicans spooked
It's clear that Claire McCaskill could shoot someone on Fifth Avenue and still win reelection.

In the general? No, though I agree that he'd be a weak candidate.
In the primary? Yes.

I'll be very surprised if the nominee isn't either Hawley or Wagner. In any case, I hope Missouri Republicans have learned their lesson from 2012 and 2016.
I hope so too

What lesson? They did well in 2016.

Anyways Peterson may not be DOA. I still have memories on how the Kentucky 2010 Senate race was supposed to be a possible Democratic pick up because Kentuckians are not libertarian people. It it does end up being McCaskill vs Peterson I would see this contest as the only match up in which McCaskill would be favored.  Also there is no Democratic president the voters to protest and Austin Peterson is not exactly going to be the biggest Trump ally either.
He's been more supportive of Trump than, say, Gary Johnson. He's certainly a better fit for Republicans being pro-life.
