During that time, black-clothed far-right militias which call themselves "Soldiers of Odin" terrorize Finland citizens by walking in the streets, wanting to "help" police.

Has anyone posted the stories about ing spivs in Turkey making a killing selling fake lifejackets? Honestly, I don't know  how anyone can look at themselves in the mirror after padding a child-sized lifejacket with sponge, but apparently it's the thing to do nowadays.

Nope, but here is a Guardian article on this. Disgusting.

I've noticed a few articles recently about refugees returning to the middle east from Europe.  This is an encouraging trend and hopefully the wealthy European countries will provide financial assistance to help them get back on their feet once they return.  Many of them paid so much just to get there. I'd like to see substantial "severance package" type financial inducements to encourage this.  Also encouraging is that the German government is paying for ads in Afghanistan to discourage people from coming in the first place. Hopefully the personal stories of these returnees, and the reasons they decided to come back will receive wide coverage and began to resonate in the sending regions.

I wonder if the NY Times headline on the event read:
15 year old Refugee Arrested for Difference of Opinion

Or do they only do that for Muslims that stab certain nationalities?

The victim was of Christian Lebanese descent.

Dutch Labour leader Samsom wants to send all refugees who arrive in Europe by boat back to Turkey, and in exchange the EU will take 150000-250000 refugees a year from Turkey. Sounds like a pretty good plan to me, atleast a lot better than the current situation.

Your description is somewhat misleading. Basically, based on average rates of rejection about 60,000 (possibly up to 80,000) of the 163,000 people who applied for asylum last year will have their applications rejected. It is not like there is an official position on the number of applications that should be accepted/rejected..

So Merkel now says that Syrians and Iraqis should plan on going home once their countries are at peace.  Not sure if she had said this before, but good that its mentioned as the end goal.  Also brings up question of whether refugees are in better conditions in their temporary home in Germany or where they were before, since they are only in Germany on a temporary basis, according to Merkel.

Austria's main southern border checkpoint @ Spielfeld is now fully operational, btw.

http://www.theguardian.com/world/2016/jan/19/austrian-army-to-tighten-migrant-border-checks

In recent months it was upgraded to an almost airport-sytle border crossing in which incoming migrants are screened for weapons, fingerprinted, registered and then either transported to the German border (if they want to) or to centers in Austria (if they file for asylum here).

The border crossing and the staff there (police, military, aide groups, translators) are able to handle up to 12.000 migrants coming into Austria each day now. Currently, 2.000-3.000 are coming to Spielfeld each day - but between Sept.-Nov. there were 10.000 on some days (and we can assume that it will be the same this year).

Migrants coming in are now also more frequently screened for "economic migrants", which means people from Kosovo, Morocco, Algeria, etc. are immediately sorted out and brought back to Slovenia using a gateway in the border fence and handed over to Slovenian authorities. Of course they will try again later via the unsecured green border or other routes ...

AfD leader muses about shooting migrants crossing the border.

Yeah, I think that is a good aim, especially if it ends the shoddy boat crossings. ALthough they should hold off on moving families back for a while.

Oh man ... Austria's government unveiled a plan to pay every illegal migrant 500€ if they voluntarily agree to be deported within 3 months of illegally entering the country:

In what should be a shock to absolutely no-one, a recent claim by a teenage girl that she had been raped by a group of migrants turns out to be completely made up.

Also shows how the Kremlin propaganda machine is actively poisoning the political climate in Germany, trying to instrumentalize ex-Soviet Germans and promoting far-right politicians all over Europe.
(The Kremlin's best propaganda tools [unwittingly] of course remain some of the pro-Maidan center-left foreign policy journalists on ARD, ZDF and some of the leading newspapers.)

I guess that's what you get when there is such a big gap between most of the media's portrayal of events on the one hand and many people's perception of the actual situation on the other hand. That vacuum is bound to be filled.

In a populist move to gather political points among those naive enough to support the wave of asylum seekers (and perhaps to deliberately annoy his coalition partner, the Finns Party), our Prime Minister Juha Sipilä (Centre Party) has decided to offer his own house in Kempele, Northern Finland, as an accomodation for circa 20 asylum seekers.

Sipilä has quietly backed away from this proposal, saying that accomodating asylum seekers in the house would not be feasible after all. The original offer was widely reported in the Arabic speaking media and undoubtedly had an effect on several asylum seekers who were deciding between traveling to Finland or Sweden/Germany. Sipilä's words, designed to get him a "tolerant" reputation, thus added several thousands to the number of asylum seekers coming to Finland (and thus adding millions of euros in government spending), and in the end he didn't even keep his word. What a leader.

Schroeder is a shill, but he knows it and everybody else knows.
Journalists on ARD etc. are trying to work against Putin with the best intentions. But many people I know (who would never vote AfD or something of this direction) expressed distrust into ARD reporting on Russia/Ukraine-related themes after watching only the ARD news and reading the Süddeutsche Zeitung. They never consumed anything form the Kremlin propaganda machine and they still have become "Putin-understanders" to a certain degree. And now the memory is too fresh and there are new controversial themes in the public discussion.
That's why I called these journalists the Kremlin's best propaganda tools.

How is the establishment media furthering the "understander" narrative, exactly? Talking up Ukrainian Nazis and other "crimes" of theirs? Implying the Crimean referendum should be considered representative and fair?

No, in my view parts of the German establishment media took a pro-Maidan stance up to a degree that was counterproductive. Parts of the German public are quite allergic to what they perceive as "campaign journalism" on a variety of issues. For example I think that the media campaigns before the Olympia referendums in Hamburg and Munich were not so well received on the line of "If they have to do a campaign like this for it, it can't be a good thing..." And this is not a Pegida/AfD problem but goes far into the Greens/CDU/SPD/FDP voting middle-of-the-road bourgeoisie.

The Maidan revolution is a lengthy issue and this is not the right thread for it. I know that I brought it up myself and I'm sorry for derailing the thread.
