Suppose that past Presidential elections had the same candidates, but instead of the electoral college, they used a national IRV vote. How would your ballots have looked? I'm particularly interested in the races with more than 2 major candidates, namely: 1824, 1836, 1856, 1860, and 1912; and let's throw in 1848, 1948, and 1996 even though Van Buren, Thurmond, Wallace, and Perot weren't exactly major candidates those years.

Here are mine:

1824
1. Crawford
2. Jackson
3. Adams
4. Clay

1836
1. Van Buren
(wouldn't have cared too much about the order of Whigs)

1848
1. Van Buren
2. Smith
3. Taylor
4. Cass

1856
1. Frémont
2. Buchanan
3. Fillmore

1860
1. Lincoln
2. Douglas
3. Bell
4. Breckinridge

1912
1. Taft
2. Roosevelt
3. Wilson
4. Debs

1948
1. Dewey
2. Truman
3. Wallace
(no vote for Thurmond or minor candidates)

1996
1. Browne
2. Perot
3. Dole
4. Nader
5. Clinton
6. Phillips
7. Hagelin

Well, not an overwhelming response yet, but here are the tallies so far for the elections I was most interested in:

1824: Adams in 2 rounds (no votes for Clay, Jackson eliminated, then Adams over Crawford).

1836: Van Buren in 1 round.

1848: Van Buren unanimously. Taylor without Van Buren.

1856: Frémont unanimously. Buchanan without Frémont.

1860: Lincoln unanimously. Douglas without Lincoln.

1912: Taft in 2 rounds (Roosevelt, Wilson, and Debs eliminated at the same time; enough votes transfer to Taft)

1948: Dewey in 1 round.

1996: Harry Browne in 1 round (lol).

Glad to see the forum is still sane.

Since this was bumped, I'll tally again:

1824: Adams in 3 rounds. Jackson eliminated in the 1st round (2 votes to 3 for all others), Crawford and Clay eliminated together after the 2nd round (3 votes each to Adams' 5) and enough votes transfer to Adams.

1836: Van Buren in 1 round (8 votes to Webster's 2 and White's 1)

1848: Van Buren in 1 round (9 votes to Taylor's 2)

1856: Fremont unanimously (10 votes)

1860: Lincoln in 1 round (9 votes to Bell's 2)

1912: Roosevelt in 2 rounds. Wilson and Debs eliminated after 1st round (1 vote each vs. 6 for Roosevelt and 4 for Taft), and Roosevelt wins 2nd round with 6 votes to Taft's 5.

1948: TIE between Dewey and Truman in the 2nd round. Wallace, Thurmond, and Dobbs are eliminated after the 1st round (1 vote each to Dewey's 4 and Truman's 4), and Dewey and Truman tie with 5 each in the 2nd.

1996: TIE between Clinton and Harry Browne in the 2nd round. Dole, Nader, and White are eliminated after the 1st round (1 vote each to Browne's 5 and Clinton's 3), and Browne and Clinton tie with 5 each in the 2nd.

While I wouldn't vote for a third party normally (main exceptions are Perot and possibly Teddy Roosevelt/Nader), I included them since it wouldn't matter with RCV. These are without hindsight too.

1824
1. Jackson
2. Clay
3. Crawford
4. Adams

1836
1. Van Buren
(wouldn't have cared too much about the order of Whigs)

1848
1. Van Buren
2. Smith
3. Cass
4. Taylor

1856
1. Buchanan
2. Fillmore
3. Frémont

1860
1. Lincoln
2. Douglas
3. Bell
4. Breckinridge

1912
1. Roosevelt
2. Wilson
3. Taft
4. Debs

1948
1. Wallace
2. Dewey
3. Truman

1996
1. Perot
2. Nader
3. Phillips
4. Dole
5. Clinton
6. Browne
7. Hagelin

Might make another post with other elections at some point.
