in the 50s and 60s the Camden seat elected a republican (Wolverton, then Cahill, then Hunt) while the Trenton seat elected a democrat (Howell and then Thompson). The Trenton seat was marginally dem and the Camden seat was also marginally dem. The 1st was a district that should have gone republican much earlier (didn't actually happen until 1974) and I would have thought the republicans (who i think had control of redistricting at one of those points) would have tried to make Thompson as safe as possible to try to buy time in the 1st (though judging by the margin Hunt lost by in 1974, may not have changed things).

Of course back then drawing serpentine districts was kind of like wacking it on a plane - not illegal but frowned upon.

Masturbating on a commercial airline flight is definitely illegal.
