Democrats : Senator Joseph Biden wins the Nomination, defeating Hillary Clinton and Al Gore in a Huge Upset. To attract young voters, and to assure those who are worried about his health, he chooses The Charismatic Senator Barack Obama of Illinois as his running mate.

Repubilcans : 17 major canidates announce their run for president. Dick Cheney is one of them, and after winning the Kentucky Primary, becomes the Nominee. He chooses Mitt Romney as his running mate.

404 - 134

Cheney was wildly unpopular. I'm being generous letting him keep the Dakotas, South Carolina, and NE-01.

Vice President Dick Cheney (R-WY) / Fmr. Governor Mitt Romney (R-MA)
Senator Joe Biden (D-DE) / Senator Barack Obama (D-IL) ✓

The switch in the Democrat ticket makes it weaker, but said ticket is up against the weakest possible Republican ticket. If not for polarization, this would be a 1984 scenario.

Not sure, but it would be disastrous for the GOP

Cheney doesn't get much more than 100 EVs, if even that much

Dick Cheney was absurdly unpopular in 2008, like low teens approval rating. And Romney as his running mate would hurt him even more after the financial crisis. This is indeed the worst possible GOP ticket for 2008, aside from maybe Dubya himself as Cheney’s running mate. This might if anything be generous to Cheney; not impossible to see Alaska, Alabama, Mississippi, Kansas, and Nebraska falling too. And if anything I think the flipped Democratic ticket might actually be even stronger; Biden would have more appeal to WWC-dominated states at that time like WV and AR, while Obama’s presence on the ticket would still turn out black voters in droves to help in states like SC and GA. Hillary at the top of the ticket might have done even better that year.

Regardless, absolute devastation for the GOP. Polarization aside, worst blowout since 1984. Definitely in the popular vote (Cheney gets trounced by double digits) and very likely in the electoral vote as well.
