Why is there such an overlap between the "scene" and evangelical Christianity?

I wondered about this for awhile, since the two at first glance seem diametrically opposed, yet the overlap is more than non-neglible. I think a great realization though came with this comment:

evangelical Christianity sends every other religion or culture it touches down the memory hole as a point of pride.

That's basically exactly what the scene does too.

Also both put a lot of emphasis on changing yourself and becoming like a new person, and pushing through emotional experiences.

Any other theories?

I'm not really sure either, tbh. But if it means anything, it surely can describe whatever you and your buddies are into.

It's an umbrella term for a subculture based around a bunch of loosely related musical genres, offshoots of punk but not exactly what most people think of when they think of "punk".

Regardless of your personal opinions on either, you do have to admit it's quite impressive that some people were able to take what's essentially Bushie's culture and appropriate it into something that's both "cool" and progressive.

At first I thought you were talking about the BDSM scene, because that's the only time I hear people talk about "the scene". That would also be an interesting question.

Does scene still exist? Anyway, I was in high school when I did and yes, the overlap with Evangelical Christianity was huge. Not really surprising. Both are suburban movements based around malls or mall like buildings. If your family is Evangelical, they are most likely lame and live in some horrible suburb, and if you live in a horrible suburb, Fall Out Boy seems relatively punk.

WTF? My scene has nothing to do with Fall Out Boy, is almost exclusively urban based and yes, still exists and has since the 80s. And once FALL OUT BOY WHAT THE F[INKS] DOES THAT HAVE TO DO WITH IT?

There is not a significant overlap between either of those groups and evangelical Christianity.

As has been pointed out before, I think you are way overestimating the cultural significance of your individual church and possibly your own group of friends, if you erroneously think that they alone constitute "a scene".
