Yes it's all speculation, but if Romney did jump in, how do you think he'd fair against the Trumpster? You've got to remember that in late 2014 and early this year, Romney was leading the field with Trump-style margins.

Bush, Kasich, Christie, and Rubio would need to leave the race for him to stand on equal footing with Trump.

Please let another trash establishment candidate who won't beat Hillary divide up the "business" primary vote more. Sincerely, the American Dreamers

Nominating Romney would be a mistake.

Nominating someone who lost a general presidential election is a not a winning strategy. Well, it worked with Nixon, but he's not one many aspire to be.

NO. He lost twice. He lost to John McCain of all people and a defeatable Obama.

Project Orca.

He had a horrible ground game.

He regurgitated what his consultants told him and couldn't get swing voters because of that.

He can't win.

Terrible idea. The Republican establishment needs another choice like it needs a hole in the head. The way to stop trump is to coalesce the field, not to expand it.

The interesting thing with all these rumors is that it shows that there is a real fear of Trump in the establishment.  Maybe not so much that he'll win, but perhaps they're seeing that his candidacy is hurting their chances in 2016.

No one's saying they're not scared of Trump, at least not anymore. Back to Romney, does no one think he'd have a niche in the field? He had large leads in every primary poll he was included in months back. I don't think that support has just vanished, especially given Jeb's gaffe prone anemic campaigning style.

He couldn't do any worse than Bush.

Though, it's a bit early for a "establishment savior" candidate, isn't it?

The establishment savior candidate will eventually be Rubio or Kasich, the Pubbie electorate just needs to go through a few stages of grief before accepting that.

Well, I think he'd definitely be able to get quite a bit of support.  The party unified around him in 2012.  He also has some pretty glaring weaknesses, which are all very well known at this point.  I think Trump would love to run against him, he'd be a very good foil for his campaign.

Pick the guy who lost twice in a row to beat the first Republican candidate that people are really enthusiastic for in years?

Lol you see why Republicans are such a joke.

I get what you're saying and I'm not coming at this from some elitist "stupid racist Trump supporters" kind of standpoint. I just don't think Trump can win, and given someone like Mitt Romney who has been proven right on many issues he was lambasted for in 2012, I think the third time could really be the charm.

Agree with this. They would all have to drop out, endorse Romney, and have whomever endorsed their respective campaigns turn and endorse Romney as well.

I don't see it happening.

I have a great deal of respect for Mitt Romney as a person, businessman, and for his public service.

But, let's remember here that part of the problem with Donald Trump is that he changes positions to please different people. Despite having some issues right now, I still believe Jeb Bush is in the best position to win the GOP nomination.

We Republicans need a nominee who is consistent, someone who is tested and proven, and someone who has the judgement, record, and vision to lead.

Mitt Romney has changed positions on gun rights, abortion, campaign finance reform, and Ronald Reagan. By contrast, Jeb Bush has not changed positions on these issues and in fact has taken positions on immigration and common core out of line with the base of the GOP. Both Governor Romney and Governor Bush have been tested during times of challenge, and both are proven. Additionally, both have shown strong judgement.

But, you then have their records and visions. Governor Romney and Governor Bush were both wildly successful in the private sector, both helped build successful companies. But they come from very different places in government. Governor Bush ran, won, and governed as a conservative. Governor Romney ran and governed from the center-right. Jeb Bush did have the advantage of having Republican majorities in a swing state, while Governor Romney had a Democratic legislature in a very blue state. But, each one took on different fights. While Governor Bush fought for and implemented reforms to an entitlement program, medicaid, Governor Romney created a health care law with mandates on the private sector. Governor Bush cut taxes every year, totaling $19 billion, while Governor Romney raised fees by $500 million, though he did oppose tax hikes. Governor Romney also banned assault weapons while Governor, Governor Bush signed "Stand Your Ground" into law during his tenure.

You then have different visions. Governor Bush has already given policy speeches on federal spending and foreign policy, Governor Romney went into the 2012 general election without specifics. Governor Bush has supported immigration reform that secures the border, implements an e-verify system, has a guest worker program, and has a pathway to legal status - Mitt Romney is with Bush on the first two points, but he never has addressed how he'd deal with the 11-20 million people here illegally.

Both Governor Romney and Governor Bush are smarter, more patriotic, and more prepared to lead than Donald Trump. But, in terms of who is in the best position to defeat Donald Trump and win the general election, I still say Governor Bush.

With Jeb, Walker and Christie flailing, I think Romney would start out in the low 20s. It might quickly become a Trump VS Romney race.

Can someone tell me why Romney would be a stronger candidate than...

Bush?

Rubio?

Walker?

Christie?

Kasich?

I'm waiting with solid rebuttals.
