Sen. Casey recently announced his support for the 20-week ban: http://thetimes-tribune.com/opinion/pro-life-and-pro-planned-parenthood-1.1930507#.Vdu7d-X9YRo.twitter

With the 54 GOP Senators (even pro-choice Republicans like Pataki support a 20-week ban), the two Democrats who voted to defund PP (Manchin and Donnelly), and Casey, we have 57 votes in favor of banning abortion at 20 weeks.

The question is where the last three will come.  Heitkamp is probably the next most likely.  Possibilities for the final two:

Jon Tester
Harry Reid
Claire McCaskill
Mark Warner

Any others?

There will be up to 55 votes for it.   Casey, Donelly and Manchin vote Aye; Kirk and Collins vote Nay.

Warner and possibly Reid wouldn't surprise me if they voted Yes (still under 50% though), but as shua noted, it likely would not get you to 60. Wouldn't the president oppose it anyway?

I don't know of anything in Warner's voting history - or in Reid's recent voting history - that would lead me to think either vote yes.

Reid claims he is pro-life (that shocked me too at first), so it's put-up or shut-up time for him.

Warner and Reid wouldn't vote for this. And either way, there's no way it gets to 67 votes.

Why does Reid claim to be pro-life yet wouldn't support a TWENTY-WEEK ban?  Regardless of your personal opinion, that is ANYTHING but a fringe position to hold.

I would be very surprised if this passed.

He is a liar.

Reid tended to vote for abortion restrictions before he became the Senate leader for the Democrats.  It's not especially surprising that he may have shifted to the party views on this matter.

The only problem with abortion is that not enough teen girls are having them. Vote no.

Even if this somehow gets past the filibuster, it won't surpass a veto.

So 20 weeks isn't enough time for someone to decide if they want to keep their kid or not?
I cannot understand how anyone would oppose this. Even if you are "pro-choice" why would you oppose it?

Few late abortions are done because the mother simply wants to not have a child at the time. Rather, they are mainly done at that late date because of fetal abnormalities. Amniocentesis, the safest of the fetal genetic tests, is typically done between the 14th and 16th weeks. (Earlier increases the risk of miscarriage.) That leaves little time for getting the results, making a decision if a negative result has occurred, and then scheduling an abortion at one of the few clinics set up to handle late term abortions.

I am. But I also think that abortion and requiring a license to have a child are the only way we can save society. No wonder our generation is f***ed...

Even if this passes, Obama would surely veto it, right?

You're disappointed by something your senator didn't do yet?

I'm kind of astonished Casey actually made a pro-life vote on something newsworthy. That only happens a couple times a decade or so!

Oh, right. That one Dem Senator who's pro-life in a state where he doesn't need to be.

Not all politicians choose their positions based on what they 'need' to get elected. Some stick to their personal convictions despite litmus tests and not needing to stick to their conviction to stay in office. We need more politicians willing to vote against their party on certain issues, not less.
