So 20 weeks isn't enough time for someone to decide if they want to keep their kid or not?
I cannot understand how anyone would oppose this. Even if you are "pro-choice" why would you oppose it?
Few late abortions are done because the mother simply wants to not have a child at the time. Rather, they are mainly done at that late date because of fetal abnormalities. Amniocentesis, the safest of the fetal genetic tests, is typically done between the 14th and 16th weeks. (Earlier increases the risk of miscarriage.) That leaves little time for getting the results, making a decision if a negative result has occurred, and then scheduling an abortion at one of the few clinics set up to handle late term abortions.
