Mr. Speaker,
To what limited extent they can, separated, as we are, by oceans as well as religious and linguistic barriers, South American nations have been leaders in addressing the Syrian refugee crisis. Brazil in particular has granted more refugee visas than any other nation on the continent - including Atlasia - but that's not to downplay the importance of the hundreds of families accepted by other nations on this continent. Uruguay, for example, has taken the lead in providing refugees with Spanish classes, healthcare, housing, and stipends until adults can find jobs - I hope that other nations can follow their lead in generously providing for refugee families.
When Spain was consumed by civil war and dictatorship, refugees fled to South America. When the Jews of Europe faced persecution, they fled abroad to nations on this continent. Bringing in people of different backgrounds helps our society grow. We see no reason to discontinue the offering of humanitarian visas to those who have been affected by the conflict in Syria. Our doors are open.
