From The Hill:

[Wisconsin] State Republicans also indicated they prefer Rep. Mark Green (R-Wis.) for governor but did not issue any statement about whom they want to challenge Sen. Herb Kohl (D-Wis.).

Kohl, in his third term, is up for reelection in 2006 and is considered by many Republicans unbeatable. He won his last election with 62 percent of the vote.

I'm guessing Thompson has made it clear that he doesn't want to take a shot at it.

Kohl can't lose, no point. It's like th Democrats trying to take out Orrin Hatch.

I don't know if a Republican will challenge Kohl, but maybe a Democrat ought to challenge Kohl. Isn't Kohl pro-censorship?

It's very interesting how much Wisconsin likes Kohl considering that he isn't a very major senator.

Republicans should challenge Kohl, and I'm not even a Republican. I'm sick of all this talk about "oh we shouldn't challenge x because they have a 51% approval rating." Come on, it's not necessary to put much money into a race, but at least make an effort to keep the party machine viable.

Interesting difference between political cultures in the U.S and the U.K; over here the Parties always find *some one* to run for Westminster seats, even if they're completely hopeless.

That is quite strange...Wisconsin dislikes the nationally recognized Russ Feingold more than the nearly unknown Herb Kohl.  It must be the Presidential factor (few Presidential hopefuls spend as much time in their state as their plain Senate partner)

Even of political junkies, I would say Kohl would be one of the least, if not the least recognizable of you showed people his pictures.  Hard to believe the guy has such a low profile, being on the Judiciary Cmte.

You guys are way overanalyzing this.

When you don't know anything about someone, there's nothing to dislike.
