Honestly, the most surprising thing about this whole story is that poll. In February there were almost as many dead Russians in Ukraine as Americans in Afghanistan and yet only 26% of Russians seem to believe that they're even a part of the war.

If they have that many casualties they've got to have many 10s of thousands of troops on the ground (or they're doing very poorly).  Either there are many many people in the Russian Army that are great at keeping secrets (unlikely), the Russian people lie to pollsters (fairly likely) or the Russian people don't believe their neighbors when they tell them young Boris died in fighting in the Ukraine, just like his great Grandpa (plausible).
