So, I'm flying to LA tomorrow, to move into my new home and prepare to start my first quarter as a PhD student at UCLA.

I'll probably be very busy over the next few days, but I'll try to keep you guys up from time to time. Smiley

I'm at LAX right now.  My layover is so long, that it feels like I'll still be here tomorrow.  Tongue

I'd really like to meet you, but sadly I don't think I'll have the time right after arriving. In fact, I'll have to briefly go to Las Vegas because my brother will do an internship there.

Welcome to the States, my friend!  You know, Atlanta isn't that bad of a plane ride from LA. Grin

But seriously, you should visit.

I've been to Atlanta already, it's a lovely city indeed. Smiley

Thank you all! Smiley

What kind of internship does one do in Las Vegas?

Something with a UNLV research lab.

Time for me to get some sleep: it's gonna be a very short night. Tongue

Thanks for your wishes and encouragements, and I'll do my best to keep you posted! Smiley

Get Americanized, you. Go see a Bruins football game!

(And THIS is "football"; "soccer" is something different you unwashed cheese gobbling surrender monkey!) Wink

I'm more of a baseball fan, actually. Wink And my allegiance is already set on the Giants, so I might get at odds with true LA folks. Tongue

Good luck man.  I'm sure you'll do well with whatever you're doing.  I'm heading off to California as well in a few days to start my freshman year of college at "The Farm" (Stanford University).

Ugh, Stanford was my first choice and I didn't get in... Cry I love the Bay Area so much... Though I guess it's not a very good fit for you. Tongue

Any news of your adventures in America so far?

So far the "adventures" have mostly consisted of shopping for all the stuff I will need to live in a new house and getting started with everything. Not very exciting. Tongue But I'm going to a trip through the California coast on Tuesday, that should be nice. Smiley

Rfayette, Glad you like it in Stanford! Smiley I just thought the area's culture wouldn't have much appeal to you. Anyway, if you graduate from Stanford and get into one of their graduate programs, you'll almost certainly receive a fellowship or TA position allowing you to continue your studies there.

Where'd you shop? Walmart? Target? Some other place? How have your opinions of the American people changed as a result of your endeavors into places whence you must interact with the general public?

Well, I've already been in SF for a combined 8 months, so I think I already had some experience with Americans. Wink Otherwise, doing a PhD in the US would have been a real leap in the dark (and I'm a very risk-adverse person).

Anyway, my opinion of Americans is that most of them are unbelievably nice and outgoing. I've never found it so easy to have a sincere conversation with people I just met and make good friends. I'm still not sure if it's the American way or a typically West Coast thing, but I suspect both play a role.

I just went back from a 4-day trip on the California coast organized by the International Center, along with many students from all over the world, and I think some of the people I've met there could become good friends. It was a really great experience, and we visited awesome places. Smiley

Time for a little profile overhaul! Smiley

(PS: The Socialist avatar is to show support for Bernie - I'll get back to a D one once he wins the nomination Wink)
