FG. If you can afford to buy your kids expensive clothes and iPhones, then you can surely pay for their meals as well. Priorities...

This should be in the 'Off-Topic' section...

There is a scenario (poor kid with a couple of expensive toys) where this would be acceptable (gifts, found, others I'm sure), but I'm guessing it's messed up the vast majority of the time.  On the other hand, it's pretty much the welfare queen argument, so it probably is in no way as prevalent as we might assume.

Welfare fraud is wrong, obviously, and should be smashed when discovered, but we probably shouldn't spend a lot of resources trying to find it.

Obvious HG. There's no way of knowing how they got those things (it could have been a gift or something) and making those kinds of assumptions is just rude, insulting, and bigoted.

Even though I think the GIF is elitist, it's still very true. I've seen people
on the free lunch list with iPhone 6's, expensive sneakers, etc.

I put HG.  I'm not going to judge the circumstances of those people based on those things alone.

Food is a continuous expense, unlike footwear (which if expensive are more durable and therefore a better investment) and smartphones (which would probably be given as a gift).

While that's usually true (though obviously not always...just because something is expensive doesn't mean it's necessarily better) for people who's feet have stopped growing, it's a HUGE waste of money if you're out growing shoes every ~6 months.  That's fine if you have the money to burn, not so fine otherwise.  Still not cool to judge somebody if you don't know the details....but if you DO know the details, judge the funk on.

Dude, old women living in the mountaintops of Bolivia use smartphones. Smartphones are not luxuries. This is not 1985 anymore.

The amount of money it'd cost to give every student in America a free meal every day amounts to less than half of our yearly expenditure on the F-35 project. Just to put this in perspective.

Disgusting and evil. The people who made it deserve to live a year in poverty and find out if it's as fun as they think.

Winner of the thread.

No, the distinction is that these kids are using the latest smartphone, assuming they/their parents have the cash to splash out on that instead of whatever someone else has decided their priorities should be.

While I agree with the sentiment on principle, judging the actions of poors as a rich is pretty cringey to me.

What constitutes whether something is a luxury?  I imagine the function of these devices in remote agricultural communities may be a bit different from those of most American teenagers.
