President Obama to restore Mt. McKinley's name to Denali on visit to Alaska (it's the highest mountain in North America, Denali is its native name, meaning "the High One.")

Apparently Alaska changed its name back to Denali officially decades ago, but politicians in Ohio have been blocking the federal government from doing the same ever since. Why Ohio? Because it's named after Ohio politician William McKinley when its discoverer found out he won the Republican nomination in 1896 (he went on to become President).

Why am I posting this here? Because this was inevitably get a Republican backlash and become a side issue of some kind.

I have no problem with this, not sure why anybody else would either.  (unless maybe you're a relative of his or something)  It's not like it's named Mt Washington or something.

It helps that Denali is easy to spell and pronounce.  That can't be said for Agiocochook.

If you can have Cuyahoga Country, surely you could handle that too. Tongue

Lovely news.  A geography professor of mine always referred to McKinley as Denali, regardless, and would usually complain about the situation if he got on the topic.  I'm sure he'll be pleased, as will most people who think about the situation.

McKinley's presidency represented the best of what America stands for. Garbing ourselves in faux respect for Native Americans is Obama being complicit in our national lie.

I mean sure, morally. America has never been a profoundly moral or good nation though, so I'm not sure what your point is. McKinley is the best of what we as a people could aspire to. I don't see why we should lie to ourselves about that.

That's a truly awful thing to say about the US. I thought you were a patriot.

If the renaming was being blocked by Ohioans in Congress, how is Obama legally permitted to do this?

I mean, I'll stick with my country and all that, but it's hard to deny that the United States is populated by humanity, so there's that.

What do admire about him?

(genuinely curious - even if you are not bothered with his imperialism he is hardly the apex of leadership)

If they wanted to name it after something that's associated with Alaska, they should've named it Mount Stevens.

Why does anybody care about a mountain's name so much to change it?

Freedom Change of course, but:

Give McKinley another mountain. He did get assassinated after all. Maybe a bridge?

Oh man....the McKinley Bridge in St.Louis was the scarriest bridge I've ever crossed more than once.  Built in 1910 as a dual use bridge, trains on the inside, cars on skinny lanes sticking out from the side of the main bridge.  It was the fastest way into downtown from Illinois if you lived north of the city.  So every Cardinals game, every field trip to the arch, you had to cross the bridge.  Sometime before I was born they took out the tracks and let cars drive in the middle as well, but EVERYbody drove on the outside because they did an ass job paving the tracks and they were bumpy as a mofo.

Meanwhile, the city of Venice in IL was collecting tolls from everybody that crossed the bridge, for like 60 years or something, yet did as little as possible to maintain the funker.  So when I was going over it in the 70s and 80s it was, quite literally falling apart.  Large chunks of the road bed falling into the river falling apart.  It's since been closed and reopened as a footbridge I guess.  Riding on the outside on a school bus was freaky as hell....can't see the rails....look out the window and it seemed like it was nothing but 100' of air and then the nasty ass Mississippi River.

They didn't name it Denali. It was already called that by the locals (of various ethnicities) and the Alaska government.

Anyway, good that Obama now has more mountains named after him than McKinley.

This kind of revisionism out of PC sentiments is generally utter nonsense. I have no reason to assume it's different in this case.
