I have at this moment more hours of Canadian music on my computer than American music. It's interesting considering how rare it is to find good Canadian TV and movies that the Canadian music industry is such an embarrassment of riches. My favorite Canadian band (and my favorite band in general) is Arcade Fire, but I realize that's a pretty boilerplate answer and that there are a lot of other good answers to that question.

Never heard of them, and I consider myself quite knowledgeable of Canadian music.

That's not surprising at all. Almost all movies and TV shows in North America are produced in either Hollywood and if not there NYC, and that's what most of the movies and TV in Canada are from. But it's a lot easier to produce music anywhere.

Canada has a pretty vibrant "alternative" (for lack of a better term) scene

Japandroids
The New Pornographers
Godspeed You! Black Emperor
Broken Social Scene
Mac DeMarco
Women
Arcade Fire

this band sounds like something R2D2 would listen to

I'll stick with their giants of the late '60's: The Guess Who, Steppenwolf, and of course The Band.

That's like saying that Jawbreaker sounds like Fall Out Boy.

Speaking of Canadian music, Carly Rae Jepsen's new album is pretty great. I think it's the best entry in the '80s-pop revival genre since Tegan and Sara's last album. "Run Away With Me" is the best straight pop song I've heard in a very long time.
