This map, made by Neil Freeman, shows an attempt to divide the country into 50 states of equal population

http://mentalfloss.com/sites/default/files/map--50.jpg

The most obvious flaw is that Alaska and Hawaii are disjointed parts of mainland states. Republicans from Alaska will vote but watch helplessly when Seattle decides where their EVs go.

Does this map seem to benefit Democrats more than Republicans, or is it still equal? What are the red, blue, and purple states on this map?

Here's the numbers for Rainier (Alaska+most of Washington) in the 2012 election:

Barack Obama/Joe Biden 1,620,305 56.03%
Mitt Romney/Paul Ryan 1,177,501 40.72%
Others 93,983 3.25%

Spread: Obama+15.31%
PVI: D+6 (if I'm calculating that right)

Needless to say, a pretty Dem-friendly state, and interestingly even more Democratic than Washington on its own.

I can probably do a couple more states later.

Here's the numbers for Orange (Orange County+San Diego) in the 2012 election:

Barack Obama/Joe Biden 1,139,397 49.18%
Mitt Romney/Paul Ryan 1,119,058 48.31%
Others 58,158 2.51%

Spread: Obama+0.88%
PVI: R+1

It looks like the border of this state might go a little bit into Imperial County, in which case the numbers would be slightly more favorable to the Democrats, but Orange is definitely a swing state. In fact, it would have voted almost exactly on par with Florida in 2012.

http://www.newrepublic.com/article/112467/electoral-college-reform-romney-wins-redrawn-us-map

Someone actually calculated that Romney would have won in this scenario, due to extremely narrow wins in Pocono, Susquehanna, and Menominee.

It's a cool map; I wish it weren't always accompanied by a stupid political message that it would be a good way to reform the electoral college.
