What do you think will happen if Trump manages to get the nomination? because it has become a frighteningly realistic proposition.  This is the best chance I can see for a third party having a true chance at winning.  The Republican establishment is united against Trump and a former republican running a center-right campaign against a damaged Hillary would have a legitimate shot of making it a real three person race in my opinion.

What are your guys thoughts of what will happen to the republican party and general election if Trump is nominated?

The greatest electoral upset since 1948.

If there's a serious third party with partial Republican establishment backing, the election could be kind of like 1912 (and Sanders running as a Socialist would definitely help that parallel as well).

That is a good comparison I hadn't thought of.

By the time Trump won the nomination after a hard-fought primary battle, it would be way too late for a breakaway Republican faction to mount a serious third party challenge. They'd have missed too many filing deadlines.
