This actually stuns me.  She was the first Republican Secretary of State in New Mexico in something like 40 years.

Double that time. The first in 80 years.

And hence the only reason that Invisible Obama would ever post this story.

Don't blame the messenger. I just thought it was an interesting story because of how tangled it was.

I was thinking a bit about the 2018 new mexico gubernational election last week and was believing the current secretary of state would have been a formidable republican candidate, considering she won twice statewide.

Haha

I guess this helps the electoral prospects of AG Hector Balderas. Being able to say that you managed to take down a corrupt statewide official is a nice feather in the electoral hat.

Yeah this surprised me.

RIP Duran

RIP NM Republican electoral prospects

To be honest, no one here should be cheering NM Dems. They are terrible.

What is terrible about them? Honest question; I don't know anything about NM politics.

It's hard to describe... squishy? Inept? Corrupt? Hard to know where to start.

Actually the latest bit from the Joe Monahan blog explains it pretty well. Especially love this quote from his "Alligator pond":

So we talk about what's happening in Bum, Nowhere all the time but for some reason posting major NM news is off limits and only for partisans? Duran was almost 100% going to be the pub nominee in 2018.

So who does this go to for the pubs in 2018, assuming she's guilty? There is another Pub statewide officer, after all (Public Comissionier Aubrey Dunn Jr., who beat an incumbent).

Jon Barela came very close to winning a congressional race in 2010, and has been Martinez' Economic Development Secretary since then (appointed post, not elected, but still). If Martinez is strong on economic issues, Barela seems like a very logical choice.

This is what's so astonishing about the incompetency of the NM Democrats - if they had any political skill Duran would have been doomed long ago and anyone connected to the toxic Martinez admin. would never be thought of as a candidate again.

No, I'm just pointing out the selective nature from which people pick their stories. Of course we can talk about it.

Not surprising.

State Sen. Mary Fajardo is considered a possible replacement.

"As New Mexico Political Report previously reported, if Duran resigns or is impeached by the state Legislature, Martinez will have to appoint someone to fill the role. That role could go to Mary Quintana, who currently serves as Duran’s deputy secretary of state.

Some Republicans rumored

Other Republican names for possible replacements are being kicked around by politicos, though they admit it is all speculation at this point. They are state Rep. Kelly Fajardo of Belen, Los Alamos County Clerk Sharon Stover, Valencia County Clerk Peggy Carabajal and former Albuquerque City Clerk Amy Bailey."

This may seen like an odd question, but is every New Mexico Republican a woman?

Embezzlement is not a political deed even if it has political consequences.

Dianna Duran's a really great woman. It's a shame she's gotten caught up in this. I will note that our last 3 Secretary of States have all faced indictments after leaving office. It's a very corrupt position in the NM government that needs to be massively reformed.

More to the point, why is every singe NEw Mexico Secretary of State a woman?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Secretary_of_State_of_New_Mexico#List_of_New_Mexico_Secretaries_of_State

They elected one woman in the 20's and never stopped. What a weird quirk.

I'm going to guess that voters identified the word "Secretary" with women and automatically voted women in. At this point, I think it has become tradition to elect a woman to the office.

I don't know. Every one on the list is a woman, and the comments in the article mentioned it to.

I hope she doesn't appoint Fajardo - she's a fairly moderate minority unrelated to the Martinez administration and could win in the 2018 general.
